Made by renowned optical makers Dallmeyer in the late 19th century, the Dallmeyer 5d Patent Portrait lens was a soft focus lens made by the modification of the petzval design which enabled an adjustable soft focus effect. It would work well for formats up to 11x14, and perhaps bigger. When the distance between the two rear lenses is adjusted, spherical aberration is increased to promote the "soft focus" look beloved by portrait photographers and pictorialists of the era. The portrait patent lenses made by Dallmeyer were revered for their image quality, and are still sought after by modern large format alternative process photographers.
This lens is a later variety which includes an adjustable iris diaphragm and uses a lighter weight aluminum barrel. This lens does not have a shutter, meaning that it can only be used as a barrel lens or in conjunction with a suitable external shutter.
When used on 11x14, the 480mm focal length is roughly equivalent to a 46mm lens on 35mm.
